1 /5 Neil Kerkham: I heard from previous parents of kids that go to this place that it really has gone downhill, and after attending a trial for my daughter, it is COMPLETELY JUSTIFIED!
I organised a trial for my daughter to attend, and when I asked if I could sit in and watch to make sure it is suitable for her, they made me feel very unwelcome and uncomfortable and proceeded to tell me that I am not allowed in the gymnasium and I have to wait in the Waiting Area. In this waiting area, my child is NOT visible, they are hidden behind the raised trampoline area out of sight.
The Standards in Sport, Child Safe Practices, Gymnastics Australia guide clearly states:
DO:
"Keep trainings/competitions/events open to observation by parents/guardians – this creates an environment of transparency and safety."
The Policy continues: DONT Exclude parents/guardians from attending training sessions.
I do not see this club adhering to these guidelines. There is even a big sign in the waiting area that says "No Parents Passed This Point".
Afterwards, my daughter comes out of the trial and we wait for the coach to come and tell us how she went. No one comes out, we waited, and waited, and waited, the coach is still nowhere to be seen. This frustrates me a little bit so I walk about the back only to see them sitting there just chatting away. They clearly dont want to interact with the parents. The coach sees me and seems annoyed that she has to come and tell me how the trial went!
What kind of coach, who knows that a new athlete is trialling, would NOT come out and tell the waiting parents how the trial went.
I received zero follow up from the club in the following weeks to give me any further feedback or to ask how she went.
This experience really shows me how poorly run Lane Cove Gymnastics Club is operated and what seemingly little regard and care they have for their students. I thought to myself "if they dont care now, they wont care in the future."
After speaking to other parents, I can see why kids are leaving in droves, I can see why their competitive stream is no longer competitive and I can see why the parents arent happy with how this club is going.
Id steer clear of this Club, after a little research I found much better clubs, more welcoming clubs, clubs where the kids arent hidden away, and clubs where the staff seem to care about the business, the kids and the parents.
