1.Kokoda Track Memorial Walk

Pat Chung A principal focus of the Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway is on the sacrifices made by the Australian soldiers during key battles which took place in 1942-43 along the Kokoda Track and other locations in Papua New Guinea. The Kokoda Track is a place of historical significance. Trekking the trail in Dandenong, including challenging the 1000 steps, is not just for doing exercises but also to remember and pay tribute to the soldiers who fought in the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea during World War II. Obviously, the 1000 steps is the focus of Kokoda Track Memorial Walk. It gives us a chance to experience the endurance of Australian soldiers who fought against Japanese in a very challenging jungle terrain of the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. The campaign was a crucial point in stopping the Japanese advance towards Australia, so why it was so important and why this Memorial Walk was established to commemorate the battle. I reckon this is a very meaningful trek that offers good education to our next generation to know the historical background of one of the significant battles in World War II. As this 1000 steps is a challenge, so its really quite hard to finish. With some rest, I think 45 to 50 minutes is enough to go uphill of the 1000 steps (only one way allowed to go uphill). After arrived to the finish point of 1000 steps, there is nothing to see. You can return to the start point by going downhill from another road which is quite long, needs at least 35 to 40 minutes walking. There are car park spaces, education centre, toilets, BBQ stove, shelters, kids playground and a decent Cafe for buying breakfast / lunch / coffee. What a nice park indeed!

Jason Tabrett There are definitely more than 1000 steps needed to walk the 1000 steps! But there’s likely 1000 of the actual incline steps, so just to let you know there’s a bit more walking than that. It’s a beautiful walk up the mountain with a cafe at the bottom for before or after the walk. The walk down the alternate trail in 2 ways, so although there’s not a way back down the stairs, there’s an alternate route back to the car and BBQ area. On the way up, there’s are plenty of places to stop and rest and on Easter Saturday at 2:30pm, it wasn’t crowded at all. The morning sounded like it was busy though. We enjoyed being amongst the huge eucalyptus trees and getting some great exercise too! We also walked past Upper Ferntree Gully Station on the way back and it’s great that it’s accessible by train!

Safarina Malik The 1000 Steps Kokoda Track Memorial Walk is a scenic rainforest trail packed with history and heart. With plaques honoring Aussie soldiers, it’s a sweaty, fun challenge with jungle vibes—felt like a mini adventure in the Dandenongs!

Your favourite Bald & Bespectacled broker 44mins up, 30mins down. Downhill was tougher for me. I have a busted ACL and wonky knees, but still made it. Good trek. Recommend not to wear running shoes: I wore hiking/walking boots

Jason Tabrett The national park has barbecues with gas supplied at the bottom in the picnic area, right next to a great cafe and is walkable from Upper Ferntree Gully station. There are many trail to walk there, including the 1000 steps and history all along the walk about the relationship between the trails and the WWII history we wish to remember. It’s well worth a visit and I recommend it!

Tom Stunning place to explore with some very challenging hills. Plenty of trails to explore and take many different routes to see lots of wildlife and some 500 year old trees. The views are amazing but can be challenging to get to. Public amenities are limited, not many restaurants or water stops, and few picnic areas. Lots of parking in many different places though.

Mona Siania Best time to go is early morning. First time here and it definitely was worth the hour and half drive to do. As you go up the stairs there are rest stops along the way. Everyone going up motivates you along the way to reach the top! If you are just starting out, take your time. You’ll eventually reach the top!

Synthia Zeng It’s an ideal place for families and elderlies. The park is in the mountains but easy to come on car. You can also take train to this place. Plenty of free parking places. At the entrance, people can see many birds, and short wallabies would accompany visitors during the hiking. The vegetation varieties are relatively small but the environments make this place a wonderful casual hiking route. The physical challenge level is very low, btw.

4.Lyebird Track

Jawad Arain This multi-use trail can be used both directions. On average it takes 30 minutes to complete this 1.6km trail to Fentree gully picnic ground or car park from the finishing of kokado 1000 Steps. The path is steep and beautiful, which makes it attractive to fitness walkers. Whilst the Lyrebird Track isnt as scenic as the 1000 Steps, and is a little steeper, there are also fewer people.
