5 /5 Jack: Incredible preventative and rehabilitative training program for anyone who’s trying to reduce pain or increase mobility.
I started training at Kieser Collingwood with exercise physiologist, Stacie Hay, approximately four months ago to try and reduce thoracic back pain, secondary from Parkinson’s Disease. I noticed a reduction in pain pretty quickly but then surprisingly (at least to me) I’ve also benefited from increased mobility, energy and I’ve become stronger and more agile, which for someone living with Parkinson’s, has made a tremendous difference to my quality of life.
A few weeks back I had my semi-annual assessment with my neurologist and recorded the best finger tap scores (1, down from 3) since I was first diagnosed seven years ago. To say that Kieser Collingwood has made a positive impact on my health is an understatement - for me, it feels like it’s slowing the progression and degeneration and in some ways reversing (albeit temporarily) aspects of my disability. This is anecdotal of course but still particularly significant given that there are no disease-modifying pharmaceutical/medical interventions for Parkinson’s, only treatments to manage symptoms.
The gym itself is wonderful and full of attentive and friendly staff across all positions who will assist you with learning how to use the machines and help develop your confidence and strength. The strength machines themselves allow you to efficiently train anything you could possibly want safely and comfortably. Due to Kieser’s specific model of training and the large size of the gym, I’ve never had to wait more than 30 seconds to use a piece of equipment and even then, it’s only been a handful of times in four months training 2-3 times per week. There are no mirrors or loud music and in this way, the entire operation is uniquely pragmatic, with members health and comfort at the forefront. This is further bolstered by numerous opportunities to participate in classes and/or information sessions on a broad range of health topics, all led by medical and allied health professionals.
In the relatively short time I’ve been attending, there have also been several events aimed at community building which feels core to Kieser Collingwood’s broader ethos. The highlight of which was a trivia night, but they’ve also hosted morning teas to support various charities that you can attend if you’re looking to socialise with other members but it certainly isn’t necessary if you’re just looking to improve your health or fitness.
All-in-all the experience has been life changing. I regret not doing it sooner but am grateful to the staff at Kieser, particularly Stacie who’s helped me cultivate my strength and health every week since starting, and Tom, who keeps the place running like clockwork and who I’ve also had the opportunity to do a couple of sessions with. If you’re reading this and unsure if Kieser is right for you, please give it a shot, especially if you have a chronic health condition or are living with any kind of pain or mobility issues - hopefully it can give you the same new lease on life it’s given me.
Thanks for reading!
