3 /5 James: Mixed Experience at YMCA Macleod – Could Be Great With Improvements
I’ve been attending YMCA Macleod for a few months now and have had a mixed experience. On the positive side, the fitness classes—especially Pilates—are excellent. The instructors are professional, accommodating, and bring great energy to their sessions.
However, the facilities themselves leave a lot to be desired. The gym is often quite dirty, and the equipment—while varied and generally well-stocked—isn’t always well-maintained. The bathrooms are extremely outdated and grotty, which affects the overall feel of the place.
One of the biggest concerns is the evening atmosphere in the gym. A group of school-aged boys frequently congregates there and creates an intimidating environment, especially for older members, many of whom are women. I’ve witnessed them yell at other gym-goers, which is deeply unsettling. Sadly, staff tend to turn a blind eye to this behaviour.
This venue has a lot of potential, but there’s a clear need for:
• Better enforcement of gym etiquette
• Clearer rules around sharing and cleaning equipment
• Improved oversight during peak hours to ensure respectful and inclusive behaviour
It’s an affordable option, but unfortunately, the lack of care in maintaining the space and managing member conduct undermines what could otherwise be a fantastic community resource.
