1 /5 Michael P: Summary: an unprofessional tax accountant – avoid.
Details: here are the key points of my unfortunate encounter with this business:
When I signed my tax return prepared by Tax Relief / John Schofield, I expected that was the end of tax preparation and that I will receive my ATO assessment notice in a couple of weeks (I also immediately paid him, which in the hindsight probably was a mistake).
However, John did nothing for seven weeks after Id signed my tax return. I sent three emails and left several voice messages inquiring about the status of the return during those seven weeks – none of them were answered. Eventually I was forced to visit Johns office as all other means of communication were ignored - only that made him lodge the return with ATO.
Once I received the tax assessment notice from ATO, it was incorrect and showed that both my salary and tax were entered twice (first as a salary and second as personal services income) and thus doubled up. I notified John about the issue and asked him to fix the tax return; the request was ignored. After waiting for a week, I had to fix my tax return myself with help of an ATO officer.
The short of it is that it took seven weeks and multiple reminders to lodge my tax return, and when it was discovered that the resulting ATO assessment had issues it was ignored. "Tax Relief" is cheaper than other accountants, but I strongly suggest that you will be much better off paying more for services of a tax accountant who answers emails/phones, does the job within reasonable timeframe and without reminders, and follows up issues if they are discovered.
