2 /5 Christopher Wu: Spitaki Souvlaki does Greek food, and I do understand the appeal. It definitely feels like a fun environment for a night out with friends. Very welcoming people and very nice service. However, for me, the food just did not quite hit.
The best thing I had was the souvlaki. It felt the most complete with the sauces, veggies, chips, and meat, and it had pretty good flavour. Not the best I have had, but definitely my favourite dish here.
The gyro meats were pretty average and felt more like a homemade-style meal. I wanted a bit more flavour and texture in the meat. I was left satisfied, but not wowed. Overall, most of the Greek meats here did not have that wow factor I have experienced elsewhere.
The calamari squid strips were the most disappointing dish for me. Biting into them, there was a weird flowery taste, and I am not sure if they were undercooked. I would rather something more chewy, as the texture was quite mushy.
The pita bread was fine. The homemade potato cakes were great, and the owner even gave us an extra one, which was very nice of him.
Overall, I was a bit disappointed, especially since this place was recommended to me by a Greek friend. The food here reminded me of many other taverns around Melbourne. The chips were also quite underdone and less crispy, though I am not sure if that is their intended style. It was different, and I can see the appeal, but personally I prefer crispier chips.
