I was a member of this gym for just over 1 year before cancelling tonight.
On Friday, the 16th of August, a cable on one of the functional trainers snapped while I was using it. (Photo included) I had the weight set to only around 40% of the weight stack. I have used this exact piece of equipment at the gym for over a year at this gym, and many others like it throughout my life. Under no circumstances should these cables ever snap, this is incredibly dangerous. The other functional trainer at the gym has a cable that is severely damaged and incredibly dangerous. (I have attached photos of this as well, you be the judge) This is incredibly dangerous because the cable’s integrity is compromised and the weight stack goes up to around 50 kilograms. That day I did not see any staff present to report this machine to.
Saturday/Monday I would warn anyone I saw going to this machine that it is damaged. When they’ve all seen the damage, they’ve all thanked me and avoided using it for their safety.
This evening I showed the one staff member the machine and politely express my concern for the safety of the members using it. I asked him to lock it out to prevent it from being used until it can be repaired for everyone’s safety. The staff member was extremely rude to me for making this request of him. He told me he was not trained and it had to be looked at by a professional. I told him that it needs to be out of service until that time, before a member gets hurt and he very rudely told me I was being unreasonable and refused to take any action. He insisted on leaving this dangerous compromised machine in use. Have a look at the photo of the damaged cable and you be the judge. This machine is still in use at the gym at this very moment and is extremely dangerous. This staff member replied to me very rudely and condescending, just like you can see in his rebuttals to the poor reviews on this page. I pleaded with him to do the right thing and expressed that it’s even a liability issue for the business. He continued to be rude and condescending to me. I cannot believe that this is the response from a gym employee on such a major safety issue at the gym he works at. These cables do not get this damaged without months or years of neglect. Obviously this piece of equipment has not been maintained or inspected by staff for several months or maybe even years to get to this point.
Given the lack of concern for member safety and the horrible way I was spoken to and treated this evening I chose to terminate my membership immediately. The employee never even asked if I was okay when I told him the machine’s cable snapped during use on Friday.
I have included photos of the cable that snapped on me during routine use, as well as the functional trainer’s damaged cable that is still in use.
****I am really hoping that the owner of the gym will see this and get in contact with me ASAP regarding what happened to me on Friday at the gym.****
