5 /5 Mr. M: On display is a shining example of a rare QF 3-inch 20 CWT MARK 1 High Angle Gun. (Here "CWT" refers to the barrel weight in hundredweights (CWT), thus 20 CTW = about 1 ton barrel weight and "3-inch" refers to the barrel bore diameter deploying a 11 kg projectile).
This type of gun was designed for the British Navy in 1911 and was used on British and Commonwealth warships until World War II.
When superseded by more modern guns, the QF 3-inch 20 CWT MARK 1 were used in the merchant marine to protect against enemy aircraft and submarines, as well in Australian Costal defence.
This particular gun is a naval version, was moved into storage after WWII and finally was restored in 2017 by Harbour Trust volunteers before being moved in place here.
