Phillip Quigg A very interesting and unique geological site. Below the mountain peak is a burning coal seam. The heat, venting gases and changes to the landscape are easily seen.
The walk from the picnic area and car park up to the peak is steep in parts, though there are basic steps for most of it. A reasonably fit person will have no trouble getting to the peak in about 40 mins. There is lookout about 1/3 the way up and a solitary picnic table at about the halfway point.
I visited on a foggy winter morning and though missed out on the views along the way, the quiet forest scenes were a sight of themselves. I saw half-a-dozen Eastern Grey Kangaroos along the path, as they bounded away at the sound of my footsteps. I also observed many Crimson Rosellas and a couple of Kookaburras.
Well worth a stop, if your travelling along the New England Highway
