1 /5 Sabah Abrishami: I’m writing to express my dissatisfaction with the experience my family and I had at your Essendon centre after transferring our newborn from Mickleham with the hope that he could complete his three missed make-up sessions.
Upon arrival, we were immediately faced with an issue that should have been anticipated and resolved—there is clearly inadequate parking available for families attending the centre. I believe it is a basic expectation that any operational facility should ensure accessible and sufficient parking for clients, particularly when families with young children are involved. Instead, we were forced to park elsewhere and walk down a substantial number of steps in cold weather, which is far from acceptable—especially with a newborn. To make matters worse, there was no alternative provided for those with mobility challenges or prams. This is a serious oversight in terms of accessibility and safety.
When we reached the front desk, I was informed that there was no account on file to charge us for the month. I explained that I had no intention of continuing with this centre due to our negative first impression and was only attending to complete the previously promised make-up sessions. I was then told that we would need to pay for a full month—approximately $114—in order to access those sessions. After pushing back on this, we were ultimately charged $28.50 so we could proceed with the make-up session.
While this reduced charge may seem like a compromise, it is still unacceptable that we were made to pay again for something we were already entitled to. It reinforces the impression that the centre is more focused on revenue than providing a fair and supportive experience for families.
Beyond this, the facility itself was extremely disappointing. There are no proper change areas for babies or their parents, which is a basic necessity in a centre catering to infants. Families are expected to get dressed and undressed in front of each other, with no privacy or consideration. The male changing room, in particular, lacks any secure, lockable space where a parent can shower or change their child comfortably.
Charging premium fees while providing such subpar facilities and service is deeply concerning. I would not feel comfortable recommending this centre to any other parent.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously, as it reflects not only our experience but also concerns that many families would share. I expect that your team will review both the facility standards and the customer policies currently in place.
