5 /5 Jones Enfys “TJ”: I was recommended Respekt by someone who worked with community as a safe place to get a haircut as a genderqueer person. Today I had the appointment and was immediately comfortable when entering. Everyone was really lovely and affirming. I found them really great at communicating what was happening next and checking in with me. As someone with curly hair, it can be hard to find someone who understands how to work with it but I would definitely trust them with my hair again. They were very prompt and lovely to talk to ahead of time through text after I asked a question on their website form. I would encourage anyone with questions to use that, you will not go ignored. Sensory-wise, the salon is brightly lit but upon request, you can have your cut in a smaller section with the lights dimmed or off. Because you often need to remove glasses for a cut, Id recommend anyone light sensitive request dimmed lights. They had music playing quietly while I was there and they let me know that can be turned off as well. They are quite willing to accommodate in any way they can so if theres anything you need, ask and Im confident they will try their best to meet your needs. They do have a gorgeous little salon dog which is important to know. They werent particularly loud and left me to my cut after saying hello but if dogs are a lot for you, be sure to let them know ahead of your appointment. Apart from blow-drying, I personally didnt find it loud but loops, earplugs, or noise cancelling earbuds would help for anyone particularly sensitive to sound. Im unsure if they are experienced cutting around headphones so definitely ask if youd prefer that. They were great at communicating and asking about scalp sensitivity. I personally didnt find the haircut itself or the wash any more overstimulating than the unavoidable. I quite enjoyed the wash personally. No part of my clothes or body got wet (just my hair and head) so I wasnt left with bad textures for the cut. I made the choice not to inform them I was autistic because I didnt have any related accommodations I wanted to ask for. So I am quite impressed with the level of care without having to request it. They were also really accommodating to the way I had to pay for the appointment. All around a great experience. I will be returning next I can afford a professional cut and will be recommending them to others in my life!
