4 /5 Jackie McMillan: We’d never visited Northbridge Baths before and wondered why when we got there. Wrapped around by beautiful bushland and very expensive houses, this attractive corner of Sydney Harbour is home to this excellent retro bathing enclosure first opened in 1924.
It’s all free as a bird: free parking, free entry, free BBQs, no staff, no lifeguards, no opening hours - a little example anarchism in action that really works.
The locals look after the place, energised by campaigning against the local council that was planning to shut it down. They seem to have convinced the council to continue to support it too, as everything feels well-maintained now and it’s a great place to bring a picnic and chill.
There’s a full 8–lane section for the lappies and still plenty of space for the rest of us. It’ll be at its best around high tide but even towards low it’s still good. We will definitely have this on our “worth revisiting” list.
