1 /5 Vicki Hare: I want to put into writing what occurred on Saturday the 14th of June at the Plenty Valley store (VIC).
I walked into the store and was greeted by the acting manager who asked me to fill out the consent form. After that, she showed me to the jewellery case and asked if I wanted the “2 for $80 deal”. I said “yeah sure”. I asked if there were any gold coloured studs and she showed me the gold ones.
I picked out a pair and she went away to make sure they had them in stock. She told me they did, and that was it.
After a wait, she took me into the piercing room and pierced both my 2nd lobe piercings. Everything went fine. We then waited in the piercing room for the POS machine to become available.
We eventually went out to pay and she put everything in the machine and said “that’ll just be $375”. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest. I didn’t know what to do. As someone who suffers from severe anxiety, this was my worst nightmare. I tried to tap my credit card, but it did not work (Skin Kandy don’t accept Amex). We tried Afterpay but the app wouldn’t load in the store.
I wanted to get out of there as fast as possible before I had an anxiety attack, so I tapped my daily debit card.
Once I was out of the store I rushed home and immediately started crying to my partner and had an anxiety attack. I had no idea what to do and was extremely upset.
I called customer service and explained what happened, they said they would open a case. My partner then took me back to the store, hoping to sort it out. We were informed that the acting manager would escalate the complaint.
I cannot fathom that anyone would ever pay $300 for a pair of stud earring when getting their ears pierced. I expected to pay $100-150 maximum. Had I been informed the price of those stud earrings that I was pierced with, I never would have chosen them.
There was no pricing shown. The only price I was informed was “2 for $80”.
I’m still feeling absolutely shocked, disappointed and anxious about this as I simply do not have the money to spend $375 for my ears to get pierced. On Saturday the 14th of June, I went into Skin Kandy to treat myself to something nice. I feel like I have been conned and deceived into making a huge purchase to help the store hit their KPI’s.
EDIT: it was an extremely difficult process and my family and I were forced to blast them on social media due to lack of communication, but I was eventually offered a full refund. Absolute headache.
