2 /5 Clinton Taylor: I joined up at Fitbase early July, purchasing a 3 month pass. At time of writing, there are still about 3-4 weeks left on my pass, but I cancelled knowing that money is gone.
The main reasons I will not be renewing are due to a lack of cleanliness, hygiene and accountability.
Ill start by addressing the good things:
1. The owner is a nice bloke.
2. It has a decent vibe about it.
Ill move on to the things that make this place in my opinion a bad decision:
1. The place is filthy. There is a claimed cleaning schedule (of equipment) of twice a week, which Im confidently calling absolute bullshit on right now.
2. I rarely get sick over the colder weather, once a year max, but Ive been sick 3 times in the couple of months since training there.
3. There are around 8 treadmills from memory. 2 of them were out of order from the time I stepped foot into the place, and the same 2 were still out of order around 2 months later.
4. The toilets are putrid. They look nasty, and the stank is horrendous.
5. Because of limited staffed hours, cleaning supplies to wipe down equipment can be a challenge to find. When they are available, not enough folks do the right thing. One time I couldnt find any towel or any spray bottles anywhere within any location. Sunday afternoon/evening there will likely be tissues or toilet paper out in lieu of proper paper towel.
6. Some folks have a tendency to leave equipment wherever. In the top room one Sunday night, it was clear that there had been some massive workout occur, the place was littered with equipment and weights that had not been re-racked.
7. The website claims modern equipment. Partly yes, mostly no. Ive seen a lot newer.
8. Theres rarely any hand sanitizer available, for those that like to try and kill some of the germs on their hands.
9. You pay a $50 security deposit for the FOB for entry into the gym. Pretty standard. You dont get that $50 back, but you get to keep the fob. Oh great, what for?
Its clear to me that this place does not prioritize any kind of cleaning, probably in an effort to save money. Based on some prior reviews, Im not confident this will change either. I remember in my first visit I jumped on a cross trainer, and the build up of gunk on the handles was disgusting. The claim was that they were due to be replaced in a week, but nothing appeared to change.
I get that the gym is staffed limited hours, but the reality is this is a business, and as such must be run as one. If that requires extending the hours of staff, or the owner popping in for 15 minutes on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon to ensure supplies for wiping down equipment are adequately stocked so be it.
Its clear to me after going through the reviews that they are stacked in order to try and generate a positive persona. When I saw the 4.5 star rating upon joining I was impressed, but it soon became clear to me that the reviews did not support the claims. If cleanliness and hygiene are of concern to you, you should consider your options.
